Notorious Movie Overview And Analysis Film Studies Essay Notorious is a film made in 2009 based on the true story of the life of Christopher Wallace. The film starts out with at a party in 1997 in Los Angeles. Wallace, otherwise known by his stage name the Notorious Big (he is also known as Biggie Smalls, Big Poppa, and Frank White) is sitting in a throne overseeing a party to promote the release of his second album. He is watching as people are dancing to his music and having fun. Then it shows Biggie riding in his car leaving with his crew. They pull up to a read light and a black Impala pulls up to the right of them. Biggie is sitting in the passenger seat up front. The driver in Impala pulls out a gun and fires a shot at Wallace. The film then cuts to the beginning of Christophers life in. The movie follows 3 main characters, Christopher Wallace, his mother Voletta, and his friend, D-Roc. His parents moved from Jamaica and his father left him when he was young. It shows him in 1983 when he was 10 years old, and growing up in the street s of Brooklyn, New York. He is sitting outside his school with one of his classmates and singing some raps from songs that he likes. Him and D-Roc, then discuss how they are going to be famous one day, then get teased by some girls playing on the playground. Then Voletta, comes and picks him up to walk him home, since the streets are too dangerous for a kid to be walking by himself. His mother refuses to let him walk passed the stoop to their apartment alone. One day, when Biggie was 12, he was rapping on the apartment stoop. He saw all the kids out in the streets with gold and expensive jackets. He decided that he would have to disobey his mother and leave the porch. Chris goes out and meets D-Roc, and he shows him all the ropes to drug dealing and selling crack in the streets. He spends his free time rap battling other rappers for fun. Biggie begins to love making money and buying things. He says, Those gangsters were addicted to coke on the first hit, but I was addicted to money from the first sale The movie then jumps to when Big Poppa is 17. He makes crack underneath his bed, and has skipped many school days to advance in the drug dealing game. He has an internal conflict when he realizes he doesnt want to live an average life, and doesnt want to go to school. He then goes on a date with his girlfriend Jan. He finds out he will be a father soon. He goes home and his mom finds out that he has been skipping school. They get in a fight over this. Christopher then has an external conflict with her because he tells her Jan is pregnant, and this makes him seem even more irresponsible. His mom also discovers the coke under his bed and realizes that he has been drug dealing. She kicks him out of the house. Biggie gets caught dealing and goes to jail. He becomes depressed and writes his thoughts into raps. He comes out and starts dealing again so he can support Jan and the baby. People realize how good of a rapper he is with his new material from jail. Him and D-R oc get caught dealing again, and D-Roc takes the fall for biggie, because he already was arrested and he realizes how much potential he has. Biggie was sent free, but felt terrible for D-Roc and very selfish. He decides he owes it to D-Roc to become a famous rapper. He meets Sean Puffy Combs, a producer for a small record label, who promises him a record deal. Then Puffy tells Biggie that he had been fired from his job, and that it would be tough to get him a label. Biggie finds out that his mother has breast cancer, and wants to make money to pay for the surgery to remove a lump in her chest. He has an internal conflict because he feels that he cant make it big and support his mom and make D-Roc proud. Puffy forms his own label, Bad Boy Records, and Biggie goes into the recording studio. During all of this, Biggie is cheating on Jan for a girl named Kim Jones. He rarely spends time with his daughter. He then meets Faith and marries her after knowing her for 3 weeks. He totally disr egards Jan, Kim and his mother. Biggie releases his first album, Ready to Die, because of all the bad things going around in his life. He makes it big and becomes famous. He starts going to parties with famous rapper, Tupac Shakur, from Los Angeles. One of the members of Biggies crew sees him in the streets and tells him to come up to their hotel room. Somebody shoots Tupac and he thinks Biggie set him up. An external conflict breaks out between Biggie and Tupac, as well as East and West coast rappers. Tupac and Biggie become enemies and people their shows start fights over the rivalry. The conflict becomes so serious that Biggie calls Jan, Faith, his mom and his children in for one last dinner. The eat and then Biggie departs into L.A. To promote his new album, Life after Death. It then goes to the climax, which was the begging scene where Biggie gets shot and killed. It reaches its resolution. He becomes recognized as one of the greatest rappers to ever live, and the East vs. West coast rivalry overcome their differences after his death. People on the East coast dance and sing to his music, and mourn his death in the streets. His mom sees how much of an impact he had. Part 2: The Execution There are some specific techniques the director used to enhance the film. One would be the High Angel shot. It is used when Biggie is in Jail and writing lyrics to show he is powerless and hopeless. It is also used when Biggie is in the West coast and is getting harassed by Tupac fans. Another film technique would be the low key lighting when Biggie is drug dealing. The dim lights show that the business is dark and wrong to do. It uses a flash back after showing Christophers death, then goes to the beginning of his life. This is used to gain interest to new audiences, as they will want to see exactly how and why he died. Non-Digetic sound is used throughout the film. His music is played in the background. Songs that he wrote about specific times in his life are played during those times in the movie to show how good of a story teller and rapper he is.

3:30 A.M. finds me in front of a glowing computer screen yet again. I’m waiting for inspiration. My friends, kind enough to let me use their dorm room and their Macintosh, are asleep in their beds just feet away in the half-darkness, reaping the rewards of their wisdom: they haven’t waited until the night before like I have. I take swigs of Mountain Dew from a plastic mug; it’s the sweet nectar of the Gods of Last-Minute Paper Writing. No, make that bittersweet nectar -- the taste of sugary green goodness reminds me, with every swallow, that I’ve sentenced myself to another unnecessary all-nighter. I have few ideas and even less time†¦ The blinking computer cursor on an otherwise empty screen was the college version of the blank white page of my earlier years, before technology had taken us so far. But for me it was, in many ways, the same old problem. With early drafts of a paper rarely required, I came time and time again to a point where a significant portion of my grade rested on what was essentially a single night’s work. I usually left myself no option but to write in one long session on a computer - there weren’t enough hours remaining to compose a version on paper to be typed up afterward. And time and again, my method, such as it was, worked for me. I not only survived but prospered. But I sometimes wondered, and still wonder: this works, but am I progressing? Has my writing grown? Should it be possible to turn out an â€Å"A† paper in a night? What standards are being used to judge these papers? Do my desperate all-night writing sessions somehow, in ways I don’t understand, hel p me improve? How did I learn to write at a level that has helped me succeed up to this point? My early writing education is mostly lost to my conscious memory, but I do think that regular reading, from a young age, of books of all sorts loomed large in that education. I remember a prose piece from sixth-grade â€Å"honors† English And Reading class called â€Å"Mutants†. It was my response to an assignment to write â€Å"a book†; about thirty handwritten pages, it was made up of two separate stories about young people with super-powers. I was at the time a huge fan of a comic book (recently popularized on film) called â€Å"The X-Men†, about a group of people born with strange powers who fought for good even though they were feared and hated by the public.

Individual Organizational Structure Paper Essay

There are two types of organizational structures. The vertical structure and the horizontal structure. Vertical structures have a chain of management which usually reaches from the CEO at the top making any and all decisions and then delegating authority to all the lower-level managers. The horizontal structure which is often referred to as flat structure, have close to no middle managers which means that high level managers handle all the typical day-to-day tasks as well as interacting with the customers and employees. Since most new companies and small businesses will opt for the flat structure because of the fact that they have a more limited amount of employees. The smaller the business is, the more intimate it is. The lack of large workloads means that management styles are going to be more informal than formal. This means that companies like Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and even Chevron will be vertically structures whereas mom and pop shops will be more of a horizontally structures company. Since I am currently 6 months pregnant and crazing Mexican food, I will have to use this as my company organizational structure comparison. I will begin with Taco Bell. Because it is a chain, it has the vertical organizational structure. The CEO makes most if not all of the decisions while the lower to middle level management enforces all decisions and rules. There is however, an amazing restaurant in San Marcos Texas called Gracias. They serve in my opinion, the BEST cheese enchiladas in the whole world. Now, there are only four restaurants in south Texas and each of them is owned by one person, but each store does its own thing. Depending on which day you go into the restaurant, you might get the waitresses that know that  ordering a half and half means an iced tea, half sweetened and the other half UN sweetened. Also, depending on which store you go into and which day you go, you might get the enchiladas with too much Cumin on them, or the ones that are just perfect. Each store has their set recipes, but it is always up to the cook how they want to prepare the food. The difference between this and Taco Bell is that Taco Bell’s food is pre-made, freeze dried, and more expensive. They do not make anything, everything is just put together for them and they must arrange it in the proper order. They are preparing it rather than cooking it. The stores themselves are arranged how the manager of that store wants it to look. The only thing the same is the menu and the sign out front. Taco Bell has everything looking the same, with no differences. Since CEO’s like structure and duplication, there is no room for difference or creativity. In a horizontal structure, there is room for differences because it is a smaller business where the rules are more lax. In my personal opinion, I will always prefer the smaller stores or the horizontal businesses. You get more attention in these kinds of places. They get less business because they are not as well-known and not as crowded all the time. Because they do not advertise on the television, they are reserved for locals more than tourist or people that are just passing through. Since there is no real HR department, you must work things out with fellow employees or managers. There are always laws that will protect you regardless of who your business owner is, but there is not a specific department that handles those kinds of things within the company. The location is key in this situation because it is hidden in a smaller part of an old neighborhood. All four of the stores are. This is perfect because you have the chains closer to the highway so people can get in and out quick without getting lost in the city. Since this restaurant is more directed to locals, only true locals know about it. This restaurant is ALWAYS packed on the weekends and usually full during lunch hours during the week, while Taco Bell gets I’s regular business from time to time. Because the food is better, the service is more personal, and the environment is home town, this makes it a better place over all to enjoy a good meal. Since there are only  four stores compared to the thousands that Taco Bell owns, there is less revenue, but since it is a family business, there is no need to share the money with a lot of outside investors or business men/women. Another example would be Wal-Mart versus Buda Grocery. Wal-Mart is a major shopping center chain t hat is run by many different CEO’s and higher ups. They make decisions that directly benefit themselves and hire and fire employees freely because they feel like employees are a dime a dozen. They expect middle management to run most if not all the day to day business and handle as well as track all revenue. Buda Grocery is a tiny store with 4 aisles in the small town of Buda Texas. Its owners, Mr. and Mrs. Montague, have run the store for almost 50 years and they inherited it from Mr. Montague’s father before him. There are 3 employees other than the couple themselves. George is the butcher, he took the position when Mr. Montague got too old to cut the meat himself. George is almost exact with any and all weight of meat the first time without having to put any back. Sue is the cashier and is one of the sweetest women in the world. She never has a frown on her face. Finally, they have a college student come in from time to time to help with the store up-keep and stocking. I never got his name. Mrs. Montague is the book keeper/manager. She does all the ordering as well as any HR work that needs to be done and tracks the revenue as well as signs the checks. The store was sold to a different owner when Mr. Montage died of a heart attack in 2004 and Mrs. Montague could not run it on her own. The new owners have since then re-modeled the store with beer advertisements and even included an extra aisle for adults only. The store before was a dry store, which meant that they did not sell beer or alcohol. It is sad to see what kind of changes the business has faced, but it is still a horizontal organizational structure until this chain becomes big enough to own more and more stores like this. In conclusion, we can see the differences between a vertical organizational structure, where the rules are passed down and expected to be followed through with, and a horizontal structure where things are done depending on how well they work for each department or store. Each structure works well in its own way, but I always feel more comfortable in a horizontal situation because there is room for error. You never have to fear about the higher ups coming to evaluate everything because you are the higher ups. Things are more lax because it just works better that way. REFERENCES: Bateman, T. Lesson Learned From Brave New World Essay Today there are strong debates and questions about the extraordinary breakthroughs in science such as cloning, in communications through the Internet with its never ending pool of knowledge, and the increasing level of immersion in entertainment. People facing the 21st century are trying to determine whether these new realities of life will enhance it and bring life as they know it to a great unprecedented level, or if these new products will contribute and perhaps even cause the destruction of society and life. To many cloning, censoring, and total immersion entertainment are new, but to those who have read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, the topics are reminiscent of the horror that is found in Huxleys fictional utopian world where the dehumanizing of man is achieved in the interests of Community, Identity, Stability, the world states motto. The novel Brave New World shows that in order for a utopian society to achieve a state of stability, a loss of individuality, and the undoin g of Mother Nature must occur. Successfully engineering these conditions produces a world where people are finally living happily ever after, but at a great cost. The time of Brave New World is in the future on the planet earth and it is, a pessimistic accounting of the shape a scientifically planned community would take, of its sterility and human emptiness. Ten controllers of the world states determine all aspects of society. Children are born in state hatcheries where according to what social class they will be, they are given or denied certain elements that are critical to proper development. The citizens are happy and content with their simple lives as it is shown in the novel when it is stated, We dont want to change. Every change is a menace to stability, therein lies the problem. The key ingredient to stability that the novel implies is that individuality must be absent. The government in Brave New World understands that fact and in the worlds of one of the ten controllers of the world states, there is no civilization without social stability. No social stability without individual stability. The need for stability creates a government which believes that stability can be achieved if people think and look the same. Stability, in effect, demands robots, not people. The main element of what makes a person human and unique are the emotions that inhabit their minds, which they can control to some degree. Emotions are the fuel that drives man to act on a belief or a dream, to become a better person, to grow and learn and to love. Emotions are such a personal, intimate feeling of such overwhelming individual influence it is to no amazement that the government in Brave New World discourages these intense human characteristics. Emotions are thus controlled in Brave New World, control and stability can best be achieved when everyone is happy. The government does its best to eliminate any painful emotion, which means every deep feeling, every passion, is gone. Huxley shows that the government recognizes the dangers of negative emotions when the controller states,Actual happiness always looks pretty squalid in comparison with the over-compensations for misery.Once individuality and emotions have been eliminated in Brave New World, the chain of dehumaniza tion next enters into the field of art and personal expression. Since no one in Brave New World can create or express emotions, individual expression is retarded. The lack of a cultural environment adds to the artistic wasteland and tragedy does not arise form mans situation; it once arose from the instability of a particular situation-one that in the new society has been erased. Without literature, people will never think and learn, of course they will live in a stable society where nothing will ever change, but people pay the price of creativity and the ability to think. The leaders in Brave New World suggest that youve got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art. Weve sacrificed the high art. The citizens of Brave New World see the purpose of life as just maintenance of well being, not as some intensification and refining of consciousness, some enlargement of knowledge as Huxley writes. Religion, a product of an individuals thinking of creation, is gone. People in the Brave New World are never taught religion, and are conditioned so theyll never be alone and think about the possibility of God. The creation of a religion is almost akin to an act of artistic expression, as it requires an enormous amount of emotion and individual belief. With an idea of a higher being and consequently an idea of a more important aspect of life than just remaining stable would be detrimental to the utopian world. Instead of pondering an afterlife, the citizens remain true to their society which is shown when Bernard Marx states, Fine to think we can go on being socially useful even after were dead.The importance of the individual is zero in the Brave New World. The people of Brave New World are refused any opportunity to plan their own property, change their role, rank or employment in society, or even live permanently with another person of their choice. In the end, the society has erased the individual and at the same time ceased human growth, even w hile they themselves think they are expanding humanity. Loss of identity is in large part the result of genetic engineering. Tampering with Mother Nature and the miracle of life ensures that early off in life there are few, if any emotional ties. The people of Brave New World are not born to a mother or father, instead a single fertilized egg is cloned repeatedly until ninety-six separate embryos are present. From the cloning process the identical embryos are put in tubes and then grow until they are ready to be born. The implications of this engineering are tremendous. Everyone in the Brave New World is essentially parentless and the words mother and father have become the ultimate in unmentionable obscenity. With the destruction of the family, the government has single handedly prevented the largest source of human emotion: family love. There are no mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, or grandparents. Everyone seemingly melts into a giant generic mass, all in the name of stability and progress. It stuck a chord in me and forced me to think of todays society, versus the enviably sheltered lives of the Brave New World populace. As entertainment becomes more and more extreme and cutting edge in our time, I wonder if virtual reality will take the audience on a soma-like trip into its deep unconscious? Can a new medium with even more bells and whistles than television waste even more of an individuals time? One can already see the wasting of the individual in our near future.
